Leap Orbit’s RxGov Prescription Monitoring Platform Launches in Canada

Leap Orbit’s RxGov Prescription Monitoring Platform Launches in New Brunswick, Canada, making it the first fully bilingual PDMP in the country, supporting both English and French speakers, and a critical tool for promoting patient safety, healthcare collaboration, and combating substance use disorders.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — July 23, 2024

FREDERICTON, New Brunswick, Canada – At a live event this morning attended by healthcare providers, public health officials and elected leaders, the New Brunswick Department of Health celebrated its launch of Leap Orbit’s RxGov prescription drug monitoring (PDMP) solution.

Implementing RxGov puts New Brunswick at the forefront of Canada’s tech-enabled healthcare ecosystem. Creating a connected system and improving access to primary health care, addiction treatment, and mental health services are two pillars of the provincial health plan. The system is the first of its kind in Canada.  It is also the first fully bilingual PDMP, supporting both English and French speakers.

“We are thrilled to support public health – and health tech innovation – in New Brunswick by putting the power of comprehensive medication data and cutting-edge analytics into the hands of the province’s providers,” said David Finney, a partner and cofounder of Leap Orbit.  “Clinical and public health leaders elsewhere across Canada, and even here in the U.S., can look to New Brunswick as a model.”

A new prescription monitoring program will make it easier for health-care providers to identify risks associated with monitored drugs such as opioids, and tougher for these drugs to be misused. The system aligns with the province’s commitment to create a more connected health system. It plays a vital role in promoting patient safety, facilitating healthcare collaboration and aiding in the broader efforts to combat substance use disorders.

The program, called MaveRX, tracks the prescription and dispensation of all drugs, including but not limited to monitored drugs like opioids, stimulants and sedatives to minimize the risk of harm to patients and assist healthcare providers in their decisions.

Key features of the system:

  • It includes indicators and prescriber-set notifications to help healthcare providers assess potential harm to a patient due to high dosing, dangerous drug combinations and risky patient behaviors, such as receiving prescriptions from multiple prescribers or pharmacies.
  • It helps healthcare providers monitor a patient’s progress on medication treatments for addictions, other mental health conditions and pain management.
  • It instantly notifies users of potential forgeries to help reduce fraudulent activity and prevent these drugs from reaching the black market.
  • It gives healthcare providers individualized reports about their prescribing practices and how patients may be affected.
  • It supports medication reconciliation and documentation of a patient’s comprehensive medication history, reducing the risk of dangerous drug interactions and allergies.
  • It allows other people on a healthcare provider’s team to access the system and search for patients on his or her behalf.

The system is available to healthcare providers authorized to issue or fill prescriptions, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dentists, midwives, podiatrists and optometrists. Registration information is available by emailing pmp.psp@gnb.ca.

RxGov™ is a leading PDMP platform that improves access to clinical data pertinent to a patient's medication history and the risk factors associated with substance use disorder through the capture, analysis, proactive monitoring, and interoperable sharing of a state's prescription dispense details. RxGov is the only PDMP platform in North America that supports the monitoring of all drugs, and not just controlled/monitored substances, making it a uniquely powerful clinical and public health tool.
